The Leverage Ladder
  • Reflecting a bit more today about how to think about the things I should be focusing on. I'm sure the idea below isn't original, but the process of drafting it out helped me get perspective on where I am and where I want to be. I broke out managing because in most businesses there are at least two kinds of management.

  • Level 0: You operate as a solopreneur, handling all marketing, selling, and delivery yourself. No management is needed as you're the only person in your business.

  • Level 1: You've delegated delivery to others while still handling all marketing and selling activities yourself. You manage yourself in both groups, creating your first bit of leverage.

  • Level 2A: Others now handle delivery and Group 2 management. You still control marketing, selling, and Group 1 management, allowing you to focus more on strategic activities.

  • Level 2B: You've delegated management of both Group 1 and Group 2 to others, while still handling marketing and selling yourself. This creates more time for revenue-generating activities.

  • Level 3: You've delegated selling and maintain personal involvement only in marketing and some Group 1 management. All other operations are handled by your team.

  • Level 4: Maximum leverage achieved. You've delegated all functions—marketing, selling, management, and delivery—to others. Your role focuses on vision and strategy while your team handles execution.
